The Caterpillars is a Year 1 class taught by Mrs Leaver and supported by Mrs Herd (afternoons only). Mrs Ashby teaches us ICT, Mrs Boyle teaches us reading comprehension and Mr Greig(from Premier Sport) teaches one of our PE lessons a week.
In the Caterpillars we continue to develop independence, we therefore encourage the children to come into the classroom on their own in the morning and bring in their own bags, letters and school water bottles.
We have very practical based activities in the Caterpillars to help our learning.
Phonics plays a very large and important part of everything we do to help us become confident readers and writers. We practise our sounds everyday and will be learning new sounds throughout the year. This is backed up by programs such as Bug Club and Phonics Play. Please continue to support your child by helping them to recognize the sounds in their reading and writing.
We have talking partners to share our ideas with in class. On Monday mornings we share what we have done over the weekend and write a journal of our news that we will add to over the year. This gets all of the children used to writing in sentences straight away and provides a fantastic record of their progress throughout the year.
Each day we have a short period of silent reading where the children will read their reading books independently. We would encourage you to write in the reading record log when you have listened to your child read at home. We change our reading books once the children have read them confidently, this may mean reading them more than once. When we progress onto Accelerated Reader we change books once we get at least 80% on the quiz.
We teach a broad and balanced curriculum in exciting and different ways. Please see our usual weekly timetable but please be aware that this may change for special events such as World Book Day, special celebrations or to suit the needs of our curriculum e.g creative day.
Our weekly Learning Logs are an opportunity for children to share and discuss the learning they have done at school with family at home. We encourage the children to complete the work themselves with their own pictures, writing and sometimes photographs. Our Learning Log activity is set on a Friday and needs to be returned to school by the following Wednesday. Please do come and speak to Mrs Leaver if you have any questions regarding the Learning Log activity.
Spellings will be sent home each Thursday for your child to practise and learn at home. They will be tested in school on the following Thursday.
P.E. is on Tuesday and Friday but please have your labelled P.E. kit in school everyday as you never know when you might need it!
We thank you for the support you give to your child and our school. Please do speak to Mrs Leaver in person if you have any queries or questions.
