France

Some year 4 children from both schools went on a 6 day residential visit to Compiegne in France recently. They visited many attractions including, The Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Senlis, Auvers and Parc Asterix. This educational visit helps the children to become more independent and assists in the transition to their middle schools. They met children from a French School to whom they corresponded in French, English and sign language. They bought items at the market in Senlis interacting with the stall holders and learning to count in euros. They also visited Auvers where the artist Van Gogh painted many of his pictures and where he died. Naturally a visit to Parc Asterix was one of the highlights for the children where they learnt to interact with many French people in the park.

All of the children thoroughly enjoyed their visit and said they would love to go again!

The children were encouraged to write about their experiences in France and say what they enjoyed about their time there.

This is the memories and thoughts of one child.

It is difficult to read but in essence she really couldn't make up her mind which part of the visit she most enjoyed. She talks avidly about all aspects of the whole experience.

Eco Event in Peterborough

Some of the Eco Committee visited the Eco School Event in Peterborough recently. There were a variety of activities and stands to help us understand how we can help the environment. We entered competitions, collected stickers, badges, bags and information and had a good time. We also visited some workshops where we made our own seed packets and filled them with seeds and help create an environmentally safe beach and playground out of plasticine.

Visit our Eco Page to see some photographs.

School Mini Bus

Fantastic news! A group of parents have clubbed together with the GSA to provide a mini bus for our schools. This is a wonderful asset for the children and will allow us to continue to enhance our curriculum. A BIG THANK YOU to the Gill's, Harley's, Mumford's and Knight's.

Drumming Lessons

Music lessons this term have set the whole school buzzing. Both Key Stages 1 and 2 have been drumming, led by two specialist musicians who have visited us over the past 6 weeks. With sufficient instruments for everyone to “have a go”, this has been a wonderful learning experience. Owls and Wrens recently performed their “African Drumming” skills in a short concert which included traditional songs and accompanying percussion rhythms. Thank you to all the parents who came to watch and help make this informal event such fun.

Herons and Eagles have been enjoying “Dancing and Drumming from the Punjab”. Both pupils and staff have been kept on their toes learning the intricate dances and fast paced rhythms. After half term, we hope to schedule another informal concert to showcase their work.

Clay Workshop

The children were very fortunate recently to have a clay expert, Mrs Haughton, come into school to teach them how to model with clay. All children were given the opportunity to try their hand at this activity and good fun was had by all. The Robins made fish, the Wrens modelled self portraits, the Owls sculptured African Masks, and the Herons and Eagles took their history topic of theTudors. The Herons tried their hand at Tudor Goblets and the Eagles crafted mini sculptures of Henry VIII!

Leisure Centre

The Eagles and Herons visited Flitwick Leisure Centre recently for a day of fun and keep active activities. They were encouraged to try a variety of sports and games including trampolining, basketball, table tennis, swimming, cheerleading, circuits and team games. They all had fun and enjoyed keeping fit in this way.

Both KS1 and KS2 Christmas plays were a huge success. The children performed well and thoroughly enjoyed being on stage. Your order for a DVD should be in school by Friday 11th December should you wish to purchase one.

KS1 performed "The Sleepy Shepherd" and KS2 "Angel Cakes" which was written and directed by our very own Sue Truelove.

Here are a few of the Eagle Children dressed and ready for action!

Pudsey Bear - Children In Need

Last Friday all the children were invited to wear non-uniform and pay £1 to "buy a Pudsey square".The monies raised were sent to Chidren In Need. We were able to send off a cheque for £125! The winner of the Pudsey Square was James Fryer in the Herons Class. He won a Pudsey lunch box and goodies! Thank you to everyone who took part and helped raise money for less fortunate children.

Operation Christmas Child

Thank you to everyone who sent in a shoe box for Operation Christmas Child. These were collected on Thursday and we were delighted to send 77 boxes to children who are less fortunate than many. We hope that this will brighten their Christmas Day.

No-Power Day

We decided to have an eco-friendly day to save power recently. We did not use the electricity at all between the hours of 8.30am and 3.30pm. No school dinners were cooked, instead the children brought in a packed lunch or took the picnic lunch from the kitchen. No hot water for the teachers’ coffee! (However a flask or two was spotted!) Naturally the computers were all turned off including the office PC! The children found the whole experience an eye –opener! A meter reading was taken at the beginning of the day and again at the end of the day. We recorded the energy used on No-Power Day (fridges, freezers, telephone/security system) and compared this with the day before. We reduced the daily amount of electricity used by 89 kilowatts.

The solar panels generated sufficient power to cover the 7kwh used – even though it was a very cloudy day. We also used no gas on this day. We were pleased to see that 71 children walked or scooted their way to school, an increase of 29 children compared with the day before. Well Done!

Barnados Bean Challenge

We recently held a bean challenge in aid of Barnardos. The children were given 2 beans each to plant to see which child's bean grew to the tallest height and which the smallest. The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this competition.

The winner of the tallest bean was Abby Dodd at 104 cm and Tilly Hannan won the smallest bean at 1cm! There was also a lucky bear draw. All the envelopes which contained donated money for Barnardos were put into a sack and one was draw out. The lucky winner - Jack Bishop was given a Barnados Teddy Bear!

The event was a great success as we managed to raise £704.88 for this worthy cause.
